Gentle Yoga for the Sixth Chakra: The Wisdom Chakra

We are coming up to the beautiful 6th chakra this week. The 6th chakra, also known as the third eye or the ajna chakra, is located between the eyebrows and is about intuition, perception, and higher wisdom. Its color is purple and its element is light.

This chakra relates to psychic ability, clairvoyance, and seeing beyond the veil of illusion. It is associated with the pineal gland, which is responsible for the production of melatonin, the sleep/wake cycle regulator.

When this chakra is balanced and open, we are able to see and understand things from a higher perspective and make decisions from our inner guidance and wisdom. We may connect to our higher selves and the collective unconscious, allowing us to tap into universal knowledge and understanding. For some of us tuning into this level of insight may be scary.

When the third eye chakra is blocked or imbalanced, we may feel confused and disconnected and lack direction. We may have problems with vision or an overactive imagination. We may suffer from insomnia or nightmares.

This morning I woke up with a flood of ideas for balancing the 6th chakra. I spoke them into my iphone to remember them. Here they are:

  • Pay attention to your dreams

  • Ask your subconscious for the answer before going to sleep

  • Trust your intuition, first with small things

  • Ask your inner wisdom for what you want most, then go for it

  • Keep your stress level down to access your inner knowing

  • Hold your hand at your forehead to come back to balance

  • Be open to knowing more than you think you know

  • Chant the seed mantra, “Om”

  • Do alternate nostril breathing, imagining in-breath to third eye

  • Do yoga postures that stimulate the third eye

  • Do eye exercises (I’ll show you in class)

  • Repeat 6th chakra affirmations (see below)

  • Meditae

  • Journal

  • Wear purple

Here are some affirmations for the sixth chakra. See if any resonate with you:

  1. I feel, I sense, I see, I act

  2. I trust my intuition to reveal the path I’m meant to walk in life

  3. I align my inner sense of what is right and what is true with my actions

  4. I attune myself to recognizing the changes I want to make in my life and commit to affirming them when they happen

  5. I visualize myself achieving my goals and I effortlessly embody my visualizations

  6. I re-discover my spiritual truth every day

  7. I see beyond what is apparent to what is really there

  8. I embrace wisdom as a bridge to my higher self

  9. The source of my truth is universal, un-limited, unconditional love

  10. I know that healing is my true path

Yoga this week will include meditation, pranayama, and poses to tap into our inner wisdom to help us know what we want and to achieve it. Hope you can make it!
