Side Body Long; Gentle Yoga for Wellbeing

A Peanuts cartoon from decades ago has stayed with me. It went something like this:

In the first frame, Charlie Brown is in a slumped posture with his head down, and he says “This is my depressed stance.” In the next frame, he is standing tall and says, “As soon as you lift your head up, you start to feel better.” In the last frame, he slumps again and says, “So if you want to be depressed, remember to keep your head down.”

Haven’t we all experienced this relationship between how we sit and stand and our sense of wellbeing? In yoga this week let’s focus on lengthening our side body and nurturing an expanding sense of well-being.

“I have chosen to be happy because it is good for my health.”- Voltaire

“Self-care is how you take your power back.” - Lalah Delia

“Keeping your body healthy is an expression of gratitude to the whole cosmos- the trees, the clouds, everything.” – Thich Nhat Hanh

“A healthy outside starts from the inside.” – Robert Urich

“A calm mind brings inner strength and self-confidence, so that’s very important for good health.” – Dalai Lama

Your body hears everything your mind says.”– Naomi Judd

“Health is a state of body. Wellness is a state of being.”– J. Stanford

“Wellness is the complete integration of body, mind, and spirit – the realization that everything we do, think, feel, and believe has an effect on our state of well-being.” – Greg Anderson
